It has been a little over a year since I confessed that the ongoing joke among my family and friends is that I talk about food all of the time but never eat.  That is not quite true since I really do eat, just not that often and not that much.  Quite honestly, my motto when it comes to eating is “give me simple food, that is prepared well, and is tasty”.  Sounds simple enough, right?

To that end, I am always on the lookout to sample different types of emergency foods so I can determine whether it meets my standards.  Last year, when I sampled some meal pouches provided by Backdoor Survival sponsor, Survival Based, I knew I had hit upon a winner.

Below you will find the items to consider as you are building your own perfect portable survival kit.

BIC Classic Lighters (12): A dozen full size BIC lighters at a bargain price with free shipping.

Rectangular Tin with Window: Chances are you have something similar already that can be repurposed for free.

Pepper Spray:  It is always good to have some form of defense that will temporarily halt a bad guy that is in your face.  I  suggest purchasing the type you can carry on a key ring or lanyard.

Emergency Mylar Thermal Blankets: You will be surprised at how warm these will keep you. Be sure to test one out in advance so that you have the confidence to trust the blanket in an emergency. You will be amazed at how small and portable these are; a packet will easily fit in a back pocket.

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter:  At only 2 ounces (in weight), the LifeStraw is suitable for a backpack or bug out bag.  It is easy to use and requires no chemicals to remove a  minimum of 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria.

Potable Aqua Water Treatment Tablets: Water treatment tabs are a survival essential.  They don’t cost much and take up very little room.

Kershaw OSO Sweet Knife: This “oh so sweet” knife is solidly built, stainless steel knife that comes razor sharp right out of the package. It will pretty much cut through anything the price is amazing.

Windstorm Safety Whistle: This particular whistle can be heard a long distance away and above howling wind and other competing sounds.  I love my cheapie whistles but this is the one I would depend on for wilderness survival.

Lavender Essential Oil:  My favorite lavender oil from Spark Naturals.  Enjoy a 10% discount with code BACKDOORSURVIVAL.

Help support Backdoor Survival. Purchases earn a small commission and for that I thank you!

A Practical Guide to Storing Food For the Long Term
99 cents for the eBook – also available in print!

When most people start thinking about family preparedness, they focus on food. Not shelter, gear, sanitation, power, self-defense or the myriad of other concerns that need to be addressed following an emergency or disaster situation. Quite simply, food is the number one concern people have second only to their concern for having an adequate supply of water.

The Prepper’s Guide to Food Storage is a book about food: What to store, how to store it and best practices. It is a roadmap for showing ordinary citizens that long-term food storage is not something that will overwhelm or burden the family budget.

This book is based upon my own tried and true personal experience as someone who has learned to live the preparedness lifestyle by approaching emergency preparedness and planning in a systematic, step-by-step manner. Nothing scary and nothing overwhelming - you really can do this!

  1. prepare now. starve latter . i look for the best food at the best prices i could get. so many choices some not that great as far as this goes. do some research on whats out there.

  2. I can only build my supplies a little at a time. My worry is having enough supplies by the time something happens.

  3. My biggest concern is having too much food that no one in the family really likes. I have bought smaller items and sent them on camping trips, but still have too much we haven’t tried.

  4. Greatest areas of concern would be portability (if transport of a high volume of food products is needed) and protection from contamination.

  5. My greatest fear would have to be do I have enough, of the right nutrition/caloric levels and do I have enough to share, if need be.
