Valley Food Storage’s freeze-dried asparagus comes pre-chopped into bits. The great thing about this product is that it’s just asparagus – no salt, preservatives, or anything else. Their other freeze-dried food products are similar; just the food with none of the additives.
This makes Valley Food Storage’s freeze-dried selections ideal for crafting your own customized prepper’s recipes. All you have to do to rehydrate the asparagus is soak it in water for 4-6 minutes. Then you can mix it into eggs, casseroles, stews, season it and use it as a side dish, to name a few examples.
The instructions recommend soaking it for 5 or more minutes, but I found that this made the asparagus pieces a bit soft for my taste. In fact, I was amazed by how quickly they plumped up from their freeze-dried state. The flavor was good – not as good as fresh asparagus, but that’s to be expected. As far as nutrition goes, asparagus gives you a nice dose of vitamins and minerals that are even more critical in a survival or SHTF setting than in day-to-day life.
As far as prepper’s pantries go, it’s hard to go overboard with protein and carbs at the expense of having plenty of colorful vegetables as well. Freeze-dried veggies from Valley Food Storage are a great way to get more color into your prepper’s pantry.
As for the serving, I felt it was a good size for one person. It was generous enough to feel like a proper serving size to work as a side dish (and I’m a big eater).
Freeze-Dried Beef Cubes
Like the asparagus, the freeze-dried beef cubes were simple: no ingredients other than beef and salt, which is fantastic. They were only slightly more involved to rehydrate, as the water has to be boiling, whereas the asparagus could be rehydrated in room temperature water. Still, all you have to do is let them boil for five or six minutes and then drain out the liquid.
Without any sauce or seasoning, these tasted as expected: plain but beefy! I assume that Valley Food Storage added the salt to help preserve the beef a little further, but the beef cubes don’t have a particularly salty flavor to them, which was a pleasant surprise.
The nutrition was also what you would expect for straight beef with some salt: protein and fat along with sodium and iron. Nothing fancy, but that’s exactly what you’d want: just plain beef to mix into meal ideas, without any fillers, extras, or preservative chemicals. These would go really well in all kinds of survival-friendly recipes.
That being the case, the next section will dive a little bit more into some of the survival, camping, and SHTF uses I thought these products would be excellent for.
Using Them in Recipes & With Other Ingredients
With the beef cubes and the asparagus steaming on my plate, I could easily imagine a whole world of tasty meals you could prepare with these products if you had just a few other ingredients. Omelets, egg scrambles, soups, stews, casseroles, tacos, and burritos were a few that came to mind.
You could make a bone broth and just toss some beef and veggies in, or use them as ingredients in a more elaborate soup or stew. Asian-style soups like ramen and pho would go great with the beef, and Asian stir-fries struck me as an ideal use as well. For simple but tasty tacos or burritos, all you’d really need is some cheese, tortillas, pico de gallo or other salsa, and maybe some lime, which can be purchased powdered.
For egg-based dishes, I have powdered eggs that are surprisingly good. Scrambling in some beef and veggies from Valley Food Storage, and splashing some hot sauce on it, would make for quite a hearty and satisfying breakfast on the trail, bug-out, or even during a crisis at home that makes ingredients suddenly hard to come by.
I could also see the beef and certain vegetables also being a nice enhancer for boxed mac and cheese, or perfect to be tossed into a cheesy casserole or quiche.
Harvested tons of fresh lettuce from your garden? Freeze-dried meat and veggies are a great way to turn that garden-fresh salad into a more robust meal. These could also go great mixed into pasta sauces for an extra bit of protein, fat, and vitamins to go with all those carbs.

As a breakfast nut, I’m already excited to take both of these products with me on my next camping trip for an egg scramble. I’m also excited to try more freeze-dried food products from Valley Food Storage, as their freeze-dried selections are as high-quality a survival cook could ever ask for, while having the extended shelf life that is critical for prepping and survival food.
