Treating Psoriasis with Essential Oils

Treating Psoriasis with Essential Oils

One day, a few years ago, I happened to notice that my husband Shelly was wearing a long-sleeved shirt on a hot summer day.  When I questioned him, he gave be a funny look then rolled up his sleeve to show me a large, unsightly, and extremely crusty patch of something on his elbow.  Not knowing what it was, I suggested some heavy duty moisturizer and left it at that. When this dry, itchy patch on his elbow did not go away, it was time for a trip to the doctor who diagnosed psoriasis and prescribed a prescription steroid cream.

Mind you, this was before I became a total convert to natural remedies and the use of essential oils for health and wellness.

Treating Psoriasis with Essential Oils - Backdoor Survival

The bottom line is this:  at the time, little did I know that we would be able to succeed at treating psoriasis with essential oils.  But, in truth, that is exactly what happened.

Conquering the Woes of Psoriasis With Essential Oils

I will let Shelly aka the Survival Husband tell you the story in his words:

A number of years ago I was diagnosed  with a case of plaque psoriasis on my right elbow.

There are multiple types of psoriasis with the most common being plaque psoriasis. Psoriasis is a disease of the immune system.  What happens is that the immune system over produces inflammatory cells. These skin cells build up, rise to the surface, and form raised red patches often with silvery scales know as plaque. There is no cure and the recommended treatment is a prescription drug ENBREL.

This drug has major side effects so I chose not proceed with this remedy.  After discussing this with my doctor I was prescribed a steroid prescription ointment which didn’t do much to control the psoriasis. What I didn’t realize is that any stress can exasperate the condition.

Enter Gaye my wife aka “Survival Woman”.  In late November of 2013, she  started applying oregano essential oil and her Miracle Salve to my elbow and I started to get immediate results. I began applying it twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.  This seemed the control it somewhat.

Since then, Gaye has put the oregano essential oil in a small container with a rollerball and the Miracle Salve in a small container so I can apply this remedy during the day a couple of times in addition to my morning and night ritual. By doing so, I have greater control and don’t have the unsightly visual usually identified with psoriasis.

Needless to say, I have become a advocate in the healing properties of essential oils. There are many uses for essential oils; do your research and find out for yourself.

I should note that Shelly wrote this over a year ago but, for one reason or another, I did not share it here on the website.  Then, in January of this year, more than one reader sent an email asking if I had an EO solution for psoriasis.  Boy did I!

Conquer the Woes of Psoriasis with Essential Oils - Backdoor Survival

Using the Psoriasis Buster on 05-25-2015

Over time, I have refined the formula that Shelly uses to control his psoriasis.  It has worked well for him and except for one brief period of a few days last fall, the psoriasis on his elbow is in total remission and has not shown up elsewhere on his body.

The Essential Oils Psoriasis Buster

Here is the two-part protocol for using essential oils to conquer psoriasis.

Psoriasis Roller Ball Formula

36 drops Oregano essential oil
5 drops Patchouli essential oil
Fractionated Coconut Oil (like this)

Add your oils to a 10ML roller ball bottle.  Top with fractionated coconut oil.  Apply on affected areas once or twice a day.

Psoriasis Salve

3 teaspoons DIY Miracle Healing Salve
32 drops Bergamot essential oil

Mix together in a small jar.  After applying the rollerball formula, layer some psoriasis salve over the affected areas to seal it in.

This is a two-part formula.  You start with the roller ball then layer the salve on top.  This will add moisture plus it seals in the more liquid rollerball formula.

You can download a printable version here.  In addition, a recipe to make the DIY Miracle Healing Salve is here.

Note:  When I started out using essential oils, I was very exact in my measurements but these days? Not so much. Keep in mind that often times more is not better and everyone’s body may react differently to a particular formula.

How and Why Does this Work?

Two of the oils, oregano, and patchouli are powerful antifungals.  I don’t know the science behind it, but my guess is that the anti-fungal properties play a role in the success in busting through plaque psoriasis.  As far as the bergamot, I knew that it was a terrific stress reliever and felt that the added boost would be beneficial.  I proved to be right, in Shelly’s case, at least. Here is a brief description of each oil and its health benefits, excerpted from the Organic Facts website (a good one to bookmark if you are interested in natural remedies).

Oregano:  Some of the most impressive and important health benefits of oregano include its ability to protect the immune system, prevent the onset of chronic disease, improve digestion, detoxify the body, strengthen the bones, improve heart health, increase energy levels, and even protect against diabetes.

Patchouli:  The health benefits of Patchouli Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties as an antidepressant, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, deodorant, diuretic, febrifuge, fungicide, insecticide, sedative and tonic substance.

Bergamot:  The health benefits of Bergamot Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties as a deodorant, vulnerary, vermifuge, antibiotic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, sedative, analgesic, antidepressant, disinfectant, febrifuge, cicatrisant, and digestive substance.

More information about Oregano essential oil can be found in the article 25 Ways .to Use Oregano Essential Oil for Health and Wellness. Here are instructions for DIY Miracle Healing Salve.  (Don’t worry, it’s easy.)

A Word About Essential Oils and Roller Ball Bottles

When selecting the oils to use in these Psoriasis formulas, be mindful that you want to use 100% pure, undiluted, essential oils.  I get mine from Spark Naturals because I feel that they are the best quality I can buy at a reasonable price.  If you are interested in giving them a try, you will enjoy an extra 10% by using coupon code BACKDOORSURVIVAL at checkout. I  get my roller ball bottles from both Spark Naturals (my essential oil vendor of choice). You can probably find them at craft stores but since there are none close to where I live, I must purchase them online.

Resource:   Cobalt Blue Glass Roller Bottles – Pack of 6

You will find it useful to know that 10ML is approx. 1/3 oz or 2 tsp. In a pinch, you could probably use one of those small travel bottles that are ubiquitous. Instead of rolling it on, you could dab it with your finger.

The Final Word

As with all things related to essential oils and natural remedies, what works for one person may work differently for another.  That said, I have provided samples of these formulas to friends and it has worked for all of them. If you or someone you know suffers from the woes of psoriasis, I hope you will give this a try.  Feel free to experiment by using one formula or the other, or do as Shelly does and use both.  And definitely – report back with the results.

Spark Naturals Essential Oils:  I use essential oils from Spark Naturals.  For healing purposes, I feel they are superior.  You can purchase everything you need for the Psoriasis Buster at Spark Naturals, including Oregano, Patchouli, and Bergamot. Note:  Enjoy a 10% discount at Spark Naturals using discount code BACKDOORSURVIVAL.

NOW Foods Essential Oils :  NOW Foods has decent essential oils at a  budget price:  NOW Foods Rosemary Oil, NOW Foods Peppermint Oil and Now Foods Lavender Oil are especially nice.

Coconut (Fractionated) Carrier Oil:  Once you start using coconut oil, you will be hooked.  This is the liquid form of Coconut Oil, also referred to as FCO.  I have been very satisfied with this brand as well as the FCO from Spark Naturals.

Aromatherapy Glass Roll On Bottles, Frost Cobalt Blue-Set of 6: You are going to want some of these for your oils.  I put essential oils (singly or in combination) in a roller ball with a bit of fractionated coconut oil and use it to apply EOs topically.   Note that I prefer the cobalt blue rollerball containers but they are also available in clear.  These complement the custom salves I mix up and store in this 1/2 ounce ointment jars.

Beeswax Organic Pastilles, Yellow, 100% Pure 16 Oz:  I ordered the white pastilles but have since learned that the natural yellow pastilles are better.  That said, the difference may not be discernable – just be sure that what you purchase is cosmetic grade.

Glass Droppers, Pack of 6: I bought a package of these and loved them.  When I went to re-order, I accidentally ordered plastic instead of glass droppers.  Learn from my mistake.  The price is the same so get the glass ones.

White Plastic Jar with Dome Lid 2 Oz (12 Per Bag):  I chose to use these small ointment jars rather than Mason jars for my salve.  I also have similar jars in the 1-ounce size. White Plastic Jar with Lid 1 Oz (10 per bag): I love the size if these compact jars. They are really inexpensive and shipping in free.  But, as much as I love these, I love these glass jars better!

Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil:  This is my preferred coconut oil.  I love it so much I purchased a 5-gallon tub.  Really, I did!  I find it very silky to work with a love the taste when used in cooking.  Note that no refrigeration is required and although it solid at room temperature, it melts at 76 degrees.

Nutiva Certified Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil:  So far I am pleased with the Nutiva Coconut Oil.  It is pure-white, USDA-certified-organic, extra-virgin coconut oil that is cold-pressed from fresh coconuts within two hours of chopping. No refrigeration is required and although it is solid at room temperature, it melts at 76 degrees. I was able to easily liquefy a small amount and put it in a 4-ounce squeeze bottle where I re-liquefy by putting this smaller bottle in a glass of hot tap water.  The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy: I first became interested in aromatherapy and essential oils in the early 90s which was before they really became mainstream. I read every book I could get my hands on and dabbled at creating synergy’s (a combination of two or more oils that create a chemical compound that is greater than the some of its individual components). My bible then, and even now, is this book.

Essential Oils Desk Reference 6th Edition:  I thought long and hard before purchasing this book myself, but once I did, I was so grateful I took the leap.  The information is cross-referenced in many ways making it easy to find what you are looking for.  When searching for a particular remedy, you may see multiple oils listed and any will work but they are presented in order of typical efficacy.  The nice thing is that if you do not have #1 on hand, you can move down the list.  I have found the recommendations to be spot on.

  1. I have heard the “black tar” mixed with other ingredients is effective.
Does anyone have any information on this?

    • My daughter has scalp Psoriasis near her natural hair part. We tried all kinds of products and salves to ease the scales. Finally I bought her T-Gel extra strength with coal tar and pine tar (it says it is for Eczema and Psoriasis on the label.). After the first use the scales were less and now we have added the above Psoriasis Roller Ball Formula for the itch between showers. I use the rollerball to get the oils right on the scalp without the extra greasy look and both are working well together! Her scalp is scale free and we are both happy.

  2. I had a similar problem for three years. Then a doctor prescribed a steroid, prednisone. That helped some, but the problem didn’t go away completely, and prednisone brings it own set of problems. Finally, I started taking Vitamin C, which solved the problem and let me discontinue the steroid.

    • Pam – Psoriasis is a tough one but Shelly (my DH) is still doing well with this protocol. For a short time I combined the oils in a slave and skipped the roller ball but within a couple of weeks he had a flare up. He went back to using both the roller ball and the salve and the crusties (as we call them) are now gone.

To jump start the “recovery”, we layered Frankincense to speed things up.

  3. What alternative carrier oils would you recommend? I don’t do well with coconut oil. I will definitely look into your recipe as I’ve struggled with plaque psoriasis for over 30 years. I currently take the biologic Stelara but my legs are still horrible! I haven’t worn a skirt or shorts in at least 2 years 🙁 Thank you!

  4. Great tip. I will def. try it. Psoriasis used to be thought of as a fungus they have since discovered that it is not a fungus it is an auto immune disorder. So lowering your stress increasing your water and generally getting healthy are also great things to help psoriasis.

  5. I am sorry if this was confusing to you.

You make the salve using the recipe here: // You then add the 32 drops of Bergamot to 3 teaspoons of the salve. You can double or triple quantities once you determine this works for you.

  6. I know someone who can help end this sickness and diseases you’re passing through i am a living testimony because it worked well for me and i am sure he would also love to help you but i don’t think i can post any details here in this forum, you can text me on my mobile so i can give you the doctor’s details +14086589954

  7. I love my Essential Oils and they’ve helped my husband and I in so many ways. But, please checkout and learn how what you eat (or don’t eat) partners with the essential oils. I’m one of the most stubborn people I know and I didn’t want to have to adapt my way of eating for anyone or anything, but there comes a time when the misery is greater than the effort to change. Six months ago(April 2015) I eliminated all grain and processed sugar from my diet – after having gone gluten-free six weeks before that. Wheat is so toxic to the body and is the source of inflammation and so many other health issues. Today I can say that I’m healthier – and truly feel better – than I’ve felt since I was in my 20’s. Psoriasis isn’t one of my issues but I know that many who have adopted the Wheat Belly (WB) lifestyle have eliminated (or put into permanent remission) their psoriasis. WB was created by Dr. William Davis, a cardiologist in Milwaukee WI.
WB is a perfect partner to Essential Oil protocols. You have nothing to lose by investigating WB (there’s also an FB page but the blog has LOTS of before/after pictures and testimonials of people all around the world) and everything to gain.

  8. Okay I have a question. I want to make this roller bottle and the cream for my stepdad. He has psoriasis covering most of his body so I wanted to adjust the recipie to make one large jar of the salve. Could you help me with this? Also, could I add the bergamot directly to the salve as I am making it? The salve would only be used for his psoriasis so I don’t want to have to add the bergamot every single time.

    • Cheryl, did you receive a reply?

Gaye, I have Similar circumstance & wanting to make this for my dad. Most of his body is covered, has suffered from psoriasis for more than 25 years. Only place he doesn’t have it is on his head, face or neck, otherwise–everywhere. I hate to see him suffer any longer.

My plan is to start with his elbows and over time add additional areas into the treatment.

My question is, after using the roller — once the DIY miracle salve is applied, should it be covered with a bandage so it doesn’t get on clothing etc. or does it need to be exposed to air. Also, you mentioned in a later post that you used Frankencense to speed up process. Should I use Frankencense initially AND throughout the duration of treatment?

Last question… Once “crusties” are gone, Is this treatment something he will need to do everyday forever as a preventative?

Thanks for your time responding & the hope of a miracle.

    • For the past couple of months I have been trying to simplify my husband’s routine but combining the oregano and patchouli essential oils into the salve and skipping the two step process of the roller ball and then the salve. No matter what I did, combining the oils did not work and the crusties were back within a week or two. As soon as he went back to using the roller ball formula followed by the salve, they disappeared.

Cheryl, yes, you can add the Bergamot to directly to Miracle Salve as you are making it. 3 teaspoons of Miracle Salve = 1/2 ounce of salve, so assuming you are making 1 ounce jars, that would be 64 drops per ounce of salve. For two ounce jars you would double that amount.

L.A., the salve is absorbed very quickly so I would not worry too much about it staining. When I say quickly, I mean a minute or two. We have never tried covering it with a bandage.

I believe that Frankincense boosts almost every formula but don’t see in my notes that it helped Shelly one way or another. Since Frank is one of the pricier oils, why not start without and if you are not seeing results, add some to the roller ball to see if that will kick-start the process.

As far as this treatment goes, I do believe it is a forever thing. I treats the symptoms but not the cause. Again, if Shelly forgets, the crusties will come back within a week. His elbow and knew used to be so bad that he would wear long sleeves and long pants on 85 degree weather. This formula has really helped him a lot.

Again, my apologies for not responding sooner.

  9. Thank you for sharing all this without trying to make money selling the mixture. Proof that there are still good people in the world who genuinely care about other people! <3

  10. I am new to EOs but I have a friend who is a distributor. I shared your formula with her and asked what she thought. She is concerned about the amount of oregano oil in the roller ball formula. I really want to make this for my husband but I want to be sure that it won’t burn him. Thanks!

    • Shelly (my husband) has been using this roller ball formula for quite some time with no adverse effect. To the best of my knowledge, none of the readers have had any issues either. I suppose you could try a weaker dilution but quite honestly, I would not worry about it.

  11. These seem like hight concentrations for oils! Are the oregano and pachouli a master blend that you only put a couple of drops in the roller ball? Seems high also for the Bergamot in the Miracle Salve.

  12. Can another oil be used in place of the Patchouli? I need this recipe as in NOW for my daughter’s MIL and I don’t have Patchouli.

    Thank you!

    • My suggestion is to leave it out and see what happens. That said, if you have some Frankincense, you might want to add that instead to give the recipe a boost. Often, I use Frank the first time I make a recipe then cut back after the ailment is under control and I am in maintenance mode.

    • Thank you so much! I have several different Franks… my go to is Boswellia Carteri, so I’ll use that one. Thanks again!

  13. I can not get any of your links to work for the Miracle Salve. Could you please share the recipe?

    • They are working for me so I am not sure what is going on. Here is a direct link: //
If you are still having issues, let me know and I will send you the recipe via email.

    • I have tried the links on my laptop, iPad, & smartphone. I’ve tried through Pinterest & your website. They just won’t work for me. I get a message saying “page not found”

I would really appreciate you emailing the directions.

      Thanks so much.

    • I am having the same issue. The link is not working for me. I made the salve this past weekend but I had taken screen shots prior to making it. Hope you get it figured out.

    • I will send the article to you by email as well. In addition, here is a link to a pdf of the article:

  14. Been dealing with psoriasis for many, many years since I was a child. I found that like me, others have found better results with natural cures then steroid base. What really helps me get to ‘break’ into the scales with oils is using a piece of plastic wrap on area after applying oils and lotion. I’d sleep with ace bandages on my knees and elbows to keep the plastic on longer. Until I was uncomfortable and throw them off at night, it would get into the scales and let the oils do the work it should. Hopes this helps someone

    • yes they did heal, but took a long time. i think since i was so young, hormones had a huge role in the reduction of my patches. even now with having gone through 2 pregnancys i was completely cleared after first trimester without any oils/medication. 🙁 first time I EVER had relief of psoriasis. now that i’m 3 months out of pregnancy its come back in full force. not nearly as bad as it was as a child, but small satellite patches and of course my scalp and hairline are terrible! changed up my oils formula to include germanium and lemongrass, as they are good for body while nursing baby. hoping for some relief at month 4 and my symptoms calm down a bit

    • Shelly’s psoriasis flared up these past few weeks, most likely due to the stress of our move. He has tried your method of covering the oils with plastic wrap and a bandage and it is now all but gone/under control again. Note, however, that I made him wear the bandage during the day as well. I really wanted to get all the mileage we could out of the essential oils.

    • Glad it helped, too bad i cant cover my scalp with plastic wrap. its dangerous as it can mess up your bodies way to regulate temp. hoping they have more studies on psoriasis

  15. I’ve got a bad psoriasis spot on my ankle and I’ve tried a lot of freaks but I was impressed by DermalMD Psoriasis Serum one because it did not sting, even on areas where my psoiasis had cracked! Also it is organic and a large bottle to last you a while, well worth the price, the key to its peak performance is consistency.

  16. Diagnosed w/Guttate Psoriasis bcuz I became covered w/it in March 2013 after strep throat. It was dormant my whole life. From scalp to heels I was totally covered. Was prescribed. Methotrate (stage 4 cancer drug): saw a acupuncturist & did master cleanse for 21 days & began Oil Of Oregano capsules 1 day/1 night. Completely cleared March 2014. I do get tiny flare ups when stressed & I no longer have migraines & no more PMS either. Its been a God sent.

  17. I’ve been having psoriasis for a really long time. I used to treat it with the sulphur and some prescribed medications. But I want to change to natural remedies. A friend of mine said his mom uses essential oil blends. Do you think I can use smth like this lavander blend to treat my condition? I’m not allergic to lavander, (I did a patch test, as advised), but I’m still not sure, since oils are toxic…won’t they irritate my skin even more? Thanks in advance.

  18. I have a question about the protocol. The Miracle Healing Salve had directions to add 5 – 10 drops of Maleluca (Tea Tree) Oil for psoriasis. I made that recipe and in this particular ‘recipe’ you state adding 32 drops of Bergamot Oil to 3 t. of the salve. Am I to assume that I should scoop out 3 t. of the salve I made with the Tea Tree oil and add 32 drops of Bergamot to it? Thanks.

  19. Gaye:
My mother suffers (and I really mean suffers) from psoriasis of the scalp. The itchiness, plaques, etc., are about to drive this sweet 92 year old woman out of her otherwise very sharp mind. Would you suggest this two part system for her scalp or do you have another suggestion. I would greatly appreciate your suggestions. She has used medications, but after use, her scalp psoriasis comes back with a vengeance. Thank you for any help and suggestions you would share with us.

    • Rebecca – There is a protocol for scalp psoriasis on YouTube using Hemp oil and organic apple cider vinegar. When we moved to Arizona, Shelly’s psoriasis (on his elbow)came back and was difficult to control even with this EO protocol. We used the Hemp Oil and ACV nightly and it was like magic. It is however, a bit unwieldy. If she lives with you and you can help, however, it would be worth a try. //

  20. That is not normal and to me, indicates a sensitivity to one of the oils. I suggest dropping the roller ball formula first and see what happens. Definitely stop one or the other to see which oils are the problem.

  21. Thank you for posting this treatment Gaye. My psoriasis is completely gone. It took about 6 months of treatment for it to go away, but I was not diligent about the application. It may have gone faster if I had applied it regularly. I managed to apply it occasionally in the morning and did better at bedtime. I washed my sheets every day since there was no way to keep the salve from getting on the sheets. I now recommend this treatment to everyone I meet with psoriasis.

  22. I just made your miracle salve tonight. I’m hopping for great results with my psoriasis. I also read your book on what to stock, and it is a great help. I home can some and use my freezer also, I’m now ready to start checking out the freeze dried products. I also read a lot about the freeze dryer itself, my greatest concern here is the cost of the machine and the fact that it had so many negative reviews. I may wait a few months and see if the reviews get better.

  23. My daughter has Psoriasis on her bum, pinner of one ear and scalp. We noticed an improvement with in 24 hours of using just the rollerball formula on her scalp and ear. Her bum was in one of its remission phases so I figured we’d wait for a flare up to use it there.

The pinner was by far the worst it has been with the skin peeling and very red. It has cracked in the past but this time it looked like it was also affecting her ear piercings were the hole was swollen and crusty. The piercing on the other ear was also red and a tad crusty so I used the formula there as well. Both looked 100% fine the next morning. And yes, earrings were removed and have not been used since. (She only wears stainless steel studs in her lobes.)

Her scalp is still itchy and pink (like fresh skin) but no scales! This is the first time in years she hasn’t had scales on her scalp! We are using the Psoriasis Roller Ball Formula in conjunction with T-Gel extra Strength coal tar shampoo and we think we found the winning combo for her!

I have not made the salve yet as I am out of beeswax but I am planning on making a small batch soon to test when her bum flares up.
