Welcome to this week’s Survival Buzz with an update on my own preps and announcements from the Backdoor Survival blog.
Life has been wildly crazy this week for me. Was it that way for you? Let me give you a quick rundown on my preps, offer up a few announcements, then let you get back to your busy week!
As planned, I totally refilled my Earth Tower and was able to get it refilled without a single spider bite. I was thrilled about that. In addition, I planted some lettuce, patio sized cucumber and a few flowers. Seed wise, I planted radishes but given we are headed into the summer, I am not sure how well they will do. I have never had much luck with radishes; they always get worms so time will tell.
Since I am going to be traveling to Arizona next week, I revisited my air travel kit to ensure it had everything I need. Then I compared the contents to the article I wrote eons ago. Holy smokes the two don’t even look the same. Time for an article update for sure.
That about covers it for me this week. Now for some announcements.
The Survival Buzz #173: Don’t Forget Reading Glasses
This week we have a Book Festival giveaway from one of my favorite authors, Steven Konkoly. Steve is a great guy and will be offering up more giveaway books in the near future. You just have to love our Book Festival authors!
Coming up next week is a review and giveaway for the UV PAQLITE. I know you have been waiting for this one so be sure to check back in next Friday.
With all giveaways, winners are notified by email and have 48 hours to claim their prize or an alternate will be selected. Once selected, the names of winners are also displayed in the Rafflecopter on the original giveaway article. This usually happens on the Friday following the end of the giveaway.

Something else I want to mention is that my favorite coconut oil vendor, Tropical Traditions, is having a Free Shipping weekend. Use coupon code 15615 at checkout and you will receive free ground shipping on orders of $19.00 or more! Also, please note that shipping to Hawaii and Alaska are included this time.
If you love honey, please check theirs out. It is 50% off and with free shipping, a real bargain. I buy 10 jars at a time and I normally do not like honey. How good is it? I could eat it with a spoon right from the jar. Learn more about the benefits of honey in 20 Ways to Use Honey for Wellness and Survival.
The Final Word
I am pretty stoked that I kept things short this week. Perhaps I am turning over a new leaf? I am really trying to kick back a little and not spend so much time in front of a computer. Honestly, I expect and need you to keep me focused on that goal.
So what about you – what did you do to prep this week?
Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

Here are items related to today’s Survival Buzz plus a few other favorites.
Spring Hinge Plastic Reading Glasses (5 Pairs) Includes Sunglass Readers: I usually wear a monovision contact lens or glasses with progressive lenses. Even so, sometimes I am caught without so I plan to stash these in the car and also in all of my emergency kits. The fit is okay; just little big. I like that they are more stylish than the readers you get at the drugstore.
10-Piece Precision Screwdriver Set: This screwdriver set can be used for a lot more than eyeglasses although that is what I bought it for.
Earth Tower Vertical Garden: 4-sided Wooden Planter on Wheels: So far I am impressed with my Earth Tower garden. Even when filled with potting soil, it was easy to move around on my porch. The real proof will be to see how my plants grow and thrive in my covered porch that only gets sun for 5 hours a day.
LifeStraw Personal Water Filter: The LifeStraw is considered the most advanced, compact, ultra light personal water filter available. It contains no chemicals or iodinated resin, no batteries and no moving parts to break or wear out. It weighs only 2oz. making it perfect for the prepper. For more information, see my LifeStraw review.
Maximal Power FC999 Universal Battery Charger: This nicely built charger will charge charge AA, AAA, C, D, N, 9V, Ni-MH, Ni-CD, and Alkaline batteries. It has an LED display so that when you first put a battery in the charging bay, you know whether it is viable for charging or simply bad and ready to go back to the recycle box. Yes it really works, even under solar power. I am not kidding when I say I use this charger 2 or 3 times a week. Read my review: How to Recharge Alkaline Batteries.
Kershaw OSO Sweet Pocket Knife: The sky is the limit when it comes to survival knives. For the beginner, or someone on a budget, a decent quality, all purpose knife is what you need until you have a chance to use it and learn what you like and don’t like, feature-wise, before you invest in something more pricey. Even then, perhaps the OSO Sweet will work out so well that it will become your #1 blade with no upgrade needed.
