news broadcasterFor years I have been addicted to the 11:00 PM news broadcast from a prominent Seattle station.  Yet, just a couple of nights ago, I mentioned to SurvivalHusband that the news was no longer news.  What I meant was that other than reports of local robberies, automobile crashes, and the occasional court decision relative to an alleged criminal, there was no substance to the nightly broadcast.  More to the point, it was a total waste of time.

What happened to the days of investigative reporting into real issues that real people cared about?  The days we have to endure 30 second sound bites before moving on  to the next topic, usually the weather or the latest sport scores.

With no disrespect intended to my readers who are avid fans of organized sports, who the heck cares about such drivel? I want to see what is happening with the spreading Arizona wildfires or the Nebraska nuclear plant that is underwater, or, for heaven sakes, an analysis of the European debt crisis as it relates to the American financial system.  Cripes, anything is better than Weiner-gate, Palin-mania, and the incessant political whining that seems to dominate our daily news.

Case in point: Poisoned winds from China

Have you seen anything from the MSM addressing the mercury, sulfates, ozone, black carbon, and flu-laced dust that is making its way around the world from China?  The fast-growing economies of Asia are filling the air with hazardous components that
circumnavigate the globe yet not a word is being said.  Check this out:  Made in China: Our Toxic, Imported Air Pollution.

This is just one example.  Need more?

The following blog post from The American Dream says it all: 12 Things That The Mainstream Media Is Being Strangely Quiet About Right Now.  To quote:

“In America today, if the mainstream media does not cover something it is almost as if it never happened. Right now, the worst nuclear disaster in human history continues to unfold in Japan , U.S. nuclear facilities are being threatened by flood waters, the U.S. military is bombing Yemen, gigantic cracks in the earth are appearing all over the globe and the largest wildfire in Arizona history is causing immense devastation.  But Anthony Weiner, Bristol Palin and Miss USA are what the mainstream media want to tell us about and most Americans are buying it.”

The Alternative Media

Luckily, with a little digging, you will find a myriad of alternative news sources as well as blogs to keep you posted on the real events that are happening in the world around us.  This is truly a case of there being something for everyone with various writing styles, various agendas, and I must add, various levels of credibility.  Still, what these alternative news sources do is give us back our ability to think and to make our own judgments based upon a thoughtful analysis rather than a blip on a teleprompter.

I want to be informed so that I can learn, so that I can question, and so that I can think.  I want to be challenged by the news so that I can make life choices with a degree of intelligence.  And at the end of the day, isn’t making intelligent choices what counts?

P.S.  My friend George Ure is currently on his way to a national meeting of journalists.  It will be interesting to see how he does as he mingles with is colleagues from the MSM.  If you follow UrbanSurvival, you know that George does not mince words, and that he calls the news from his own perspective with his unique style of frankness and humor.  While reading his daily spiel, I can feel my brain cells click in gear.  As they should, when news is reported the old-fashioned way.

Enjoy your next adventure, wherever it takes you  through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

From the Bargain Bin:  Update.  When I purchased by 12” cast iron skillet about six weeks ago.  Holy moly.  I was looking for a 15” version today and saw the Lodge 12″ Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet. Now is the time to grab it!  And if I remember, later this week I will share my adventure in cooking a NY Steak in the cast iron skillet.  It was soooo good and soooo easy.

Emergency Essentials is a great source of food for long term storage as well as supplies.  I just received an email letting me know that they now have Mountain House products in stock.  This is great news since Mountain House foods have been backordered for quite some time.

  1. This is excellent. I mentioned the same thing to my significant other last night. I was looking for information on northern flooding, what happened to New Orleans flooding, and the fires? All we saw was Anthony trial and hollywood news.

Actually, if you are an avid “alternative news media” reader, it seems that it takes 1 -3 days for the main stream media to catch up with the same stories. By that time, it is already OLD news! In fact, the man who dressed in female bikini was on all week and just today our radio station finely picked up on the story.

We are watching old TV shows during our early morning coffee since the News stations don’t cover any news. When the News stations needed to make money, become profitable, they lost their news formula and went into the ‘entertainment’ arena.

  2. The “news” hasn’t been the “news” in some time now. It’s filled w/opinion. It’s just another variety show now. Gone are the days when the media would present the facts…Who What When Where and How.
Now, a fair amount of time is spent on persuading you to believe whatever the networks want you to believe. I’ve watched the media doing interviews where they don’t ask questions but instead lead and direct the entire conversation. Sad.

  3. Between the incessant commercial breaks–that are almost as long as the news itself–and the inane Hollywood fluff and celebrity garbage that gets shoved down our throats, I opted some time back to stop watching the local and national t.v. news.

In the end, we the people must answer for the sort of persons we permit ourselves to become; we must accept a degree of responsibility for what we choose to digest. In the past I found myself complaining that the MSM was regularly addressing unimportant issues and not reporting on the important ones, yet I continued blindly following their daily dribble. My sense of personal responsibility hasn’t necessarily changed, but my ability to recognize “what” I am responsible for has.

    Another excellent post.

  4. George Ure’s Urban Survival blog is outstanding. I’ve been reading it for years now ever since I heard an interview with him on Coast To Coast A.M. radio with George Noory. C2C has been my source for alternative news sources that provide genuine information I can use and help “connect the dots.” Because of C2C I found George Ure. Because of George Ure, I found you. I enjoy and employ your observations and resources.

    • Thank you for the kind words. George and I have been friends since 1971 and still remain close. I keep trying to convince him to get a place here in the PNW but so far,, no luck. S.W.

  5. You are right on the money with this blog. You really hit the nail on the head. My husband still likes to watch the evening news, but I usually go and do some housework, as it’s a total waste of time. Same thing with the MSM on the net as well. It takes a real “want to know” attitude and a whole lot more digging to stay informed these days. Actually pretty sad, and yes orwellian… e.

    • Since we can no longer rely on the news being “pushed” to us, it takes a proactive effort to seek out the real news (truth) on the internet. I don’t know about you but I am finding that this takes a quite bit more time than just plopping down on the sofa and waiting for the talking heads to entertain me. The time not withstanding, if the internet goes down or is regulated, well, I just don’t want to think about that. S.W.

  6. Gaye, Sadly our main stream media has become less and less about real media and has become a three ringed circus tent. They no longer report the news but report on the entertainment world. The internet has become the main stream media for a growing number of us. I hear all about the sexual exploits of Mr. Wiener(no pun intended) and absolutely nothing about a huge disaster waiting to happen with the nuclear power plant being flooded just like the ones in Japan that is sitting in a near by state. Main stream media has now become something akin to a joke. I no longer turn on the TV to gather my news but turn instead to the computer and the internet to find out what is actually happening in the world. To hear that the government now wants to have the right to censor the internet is very frightening to me. It seems almost Orwellian to me.
