It is not often that I pop in during the middle of the day but I am making an exception today because I have a roundup of topics I wish to cover. By now you know that I have abandoned the weekly Survival Buzz in lieu of content that is more timeless. There is the good and the not so good in doing so in that I no longer have a vehicle for short little essays and blurbs on what is happening in the here in now. Perhaps the best way to solve this little dilemma is to make the Survival Buzz more ad hoc. After all, why post a blog article when there is really nothing material to say?
Sometimes we have to say the heck with it and do what we want to do when we want to do it, right? Here is the first of what may become the all-new, as it happens, Survival Buzz.
Wildfires – What You Need to Know and Do Now
If you live in a location where wildfires are common (or even if they are not), there are certain precautions you should take that may mitigate the destruction of your home and property. Although I have written about wildfires in the past, the article written by Dr. Joe Alton on his own website brings it all into focus. I, especially, take this seriously because Shelly and I are closing on our mountain retreat on Thursday. (Yes, we found our “dream” location and it borders the forest!)
Side note: Since posting this article, Joe reports that his house was saved although there is much destruction around him in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
What Types of Books Are You Interested in?
Prepper Book Festivals have been a mainstay of this website from almost the beginning. Book Festival #13 is now underway with a handful of books yet to go. Each book festival features an author interview where he or she talks about their own prepping philosophy. Sometimes I include a book excerpt. Regardless of the specifics, there is always a book giveaway and typically, there are three winners. Over the years, I have given away a lot of books to help supplement your survival libraries.
In the current Book Festival, I asked: What topic-specific book or books would you like to see in the next Prepper Book Festival?
Imagine my surprise when many of the topics have already been addressed in previous book festival articles. I am confused. Does this mean you somehow did not know about them? Do you want a list of those books so you have them handy? Or do you want an opportunity to win more of the same?
By the way, these book festivals and other giveaways are not a hustle. It is very hurtful to spend as much time as I do to negotiate these giveaways only to be told I am the biggest hustle in the survival niche. So bit it. I suppose I am a soft touch and take things too personally. Regardless, I plan to continue to do things my way and the trolls can hit the highway with their Rambo suits and their useless attitude. Ha ha ha; now I feel better.
Speaking of books, and eBooks, in particular, check the section below on why you may want to visit Facebook.
The Role of Facebook When It Comes to Blogging
I very rarely check my personal Facebook account. Plus, I almost never post any personal information for the world to see. On the another hand, I do visit and “like” a number of Facebook pages that are tied to other blogs and websites I enjoy.
I bring this up now because many of you have asked how you can get in on those “FREE at the moment” ebooks I find for you. The answer is that they are posted on the Backdoor Survival Facebook Page. Because they are time sensitive, posting these books on this website would only result in frustration when you clicked and found they are no longer free. I am going to say this again: I review every book in advance and if it is a 25-page book telling you how to be a survival or prepper expert, I pass. Why waste your time?
Here is an example of the types of books I do share, although understand that by the time you read this, it may no longer be free. Here is what I posted on FB Saturday morning:
This eBook is written by someone who has been teaching bushcraft for a number of years. Just what is bushcraft? This book will explain bushcraft in practical terms and even though most of us plan to bug-in, the tactics described are things that every prepper wants and needs to know. No fluff I promise in these 126 pages.
Getting off my soapbox, let me just say that these free eBooks are a fantastic way to build up your survival library at no cost to you. And, for now, that is all I am going to say about that.
Can You Count on Your Emergency Water?
IMPORTANT UPDATE: I have canceled the Five Things You MUST KNOW to Provide Your Family with Safe Drinking Water in an Emergency webinar. Details will follow in an email to subscribers.
Sneak Peak: Essential Oil Blends from Rocky Mountain Oils
I have been investigating additional resources for purchasing high-quality, pre-made, essential oil blends. The reason is simple: many of the blends I make myself take 5 or 6 oils. Some of these oils are very expensive and when I only need a drop of two, the investment can be steep. This is compounded by the fact that in making these blends, there is a lot of trial and error. Will it work to resolve the first aid or wellness woe I am trying to address? I never know until I try and yes, I do have failures.
So, behind the scenes, I have been trying out blends from various companies besides my favorite EO company, Spark Naturals.
Today I want to provide you with a sneak peek into both a company and a blend I have been using for the last three weeks: Rocky Mountain Oils Nerve Support. I have been using RMO Nerve Support blend to resolve the nighttime tingling I get in my feet and ankles. Sometimes this tingling is accompanied by a huge knot in the arch of my foot and horrific pain. Sorry for TMI (too much information), but this essential oil blend is fantastic and is now one of my go-to oils.
Just so you know, the Nerve Support blend it is pre-diluted which means it is safe to use as is.. That being said, when I use it, I put a nickel sized dab of DIY Miracle Healing Salve or body butter in the palm of my hand, add 3 drops of Nerve Support straight from the bottle, then rub this combination over my feet, concentrating on the ankles and arch area of my foot. If by chance, I am jolted awake at night with foot pain, I repeat the process and within five minutes, I am pain-free and sawing zzzzzs.
This blend has been a miracle worker and so far is better than anything I have put together myself. Why did I try the RMO blend over some of the other out there? Rocky Mountain sells high quality oils, plus they have a generous return policy. You can check them out at the Rocky Mountain Oils website where shipping is always free. It helps, too, that this month everything is discounted 10%, storewide.
The Final Word
Putting the Survival Buzz on a short hiatus has given me an opportunity to focus more precisely on the information you need and want to know. I have come to believe it is time to be less schedule oriented and more information oriented. Posting an article because it is “that day of the week” no longer works for me. If the internet and SEO gods don’t like it, too bad. I refuse to chase the ratings, and prefer to follow my own path.
Let me correct myself. I prefer to follow OUR path.
Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

Bargain Bin: These days my prepping purchases are nominal. That said, here are some recent purchases along with a description of what I plan to do with them.
Plumber’s Siphon Pro – Universal Gas, Oil, Potable Water: Although we keep the tanks in our vehicles topped off, you just never know when the availability of more fuel will be limited. With two vehicles, this gives us the ability to move fuel from one vehicle to another. This is still on my “to be tested list” but given the positive reviews as well as responses to the Q&A, I have every reason to believe I made the right choice.
Tayama Energy-Saving Thermal Cooker: I have not had much luck with a wonder bag and question its utility and safety when used to cook food when things get dire. With a thermal cooker, you start the cooking process on the stove (or an open fire), then finish things off in the cooker. I selected this particular model based on the price as well as the reviews.
Amara Organics Aloe Vera Gel: I wanted to make my own DIY hand sanitizer that mimicked my DIY Cold and Flu Bomb. This is what I chose as a base. I was not disappointed. I will post the recipe more formally at a later date but for my first attempt, I used:
1/2 cup Coconut Oil
1/2 cup Organic Aloe Gel
30 drops of Essential Oils (I used Melaleuca/Tea Tree, Oregano, and Spark Naturals Shield Blend)
Note: Purchase Aloe Vera gel with care. There are a number of products being sold these days that are not 100% Aloe Vera and a waste of your money.
Magical Mandalas Coloring Book and and Staedtler Pastel Chalk: For me, coloring is the best stress reliever on the planet.. I purchased this particular book based up a reader’s recommendation. The Chalk Pastels will be used to create gorgeous backgrounds and were a treat to myself.
Rocky Mountain Oils Essential Oils: I started with the Healing Essentials Kit that included all of the blends I wanted to try plus a few other oils including Helichrysum, which is very potent and pricey oil. So far I am very impressed.
For over 25 years Emergency Essentials has been providing the highest quality preparedness products at great prices. Plus, each month they feature sales that quite honestly are fantastic. This month expect to save up to 60% on clearance and overstock items..

I earn a small commission from purchases made when you begin your Amazon shopping experience here. You still get great Amazon service and the price is the same, no matter what.
Amazon has a feature called Shop Amazon - Most Wished For Items. This is an easy tool for finding products that people are "wishing” for and in this way you know what the top products are. All you need to do is select the category from the left hand side of the screen.
Help support Backdoor Survival. Purchases earn a small commission and for that I thank you!
