Backdoor Survival Book Festival 2

Reading a BookAre you ready for the Backdoor Survival Summer Book Festival?

Today I am launching the Summer Reading List along with some new author interviews and book giveaways – seventeen in all.  With the cooperation of some fabulous authors and their publishers, I have some great new books for you in both fiction and non-fiction.

Each author in the book festival brings his or her unique perspective to the quest for self-sufficiency and I am grateful for their willingness to share their thoughts and their books with me.

And then there is you – the readers of Backdoor Survival.  During past giveaways your comments allowed me to take a peek at your own prepping activities and gave me many suggestions for expanding the content here on Backdoor Survival.  Today, as we begin the Summer Book Festival, I want to again thank you for visiting.  I hope you will find something interesting to read in the coming weeks.

Before I start, for the benefit of the Backdoor Survival newbies, let me tell about the book festival and how it works.

WHAT THE HECK IS A BOOK FESTIVAL?

Summer Books 004 280x300Glad you asked.

Over the course of the next couple of months, I will be featuring survival and prepping book giveaways coupled with one on one author interviews.  In some cases I will follow up with my own mini-reviews of many of the books but only after I have had a chance to read them.

Each week, as I announce a giveaway, I may ask a question and request that you answer in the comments section of the article.  Or, I may simply hold a raffle as I try to find new ways to select the winners.  Regardless of the rules, which may change with each giveaway, winners will be selected at random and the book or e-book will be sent directly by the author or the publisher.

Easy peasy.  Without further babble from me, let us get started on the Summer Reading List which is presented below in no particular order.

Don’t Be A Victim!: An Officer’s Advice on Preventing Crime

People are planning for world changing, collapse of society events in droves; from flu pandemics to potential electromagnetic pulses (EMPs). While this is a goal worth pursuing, the odds that any of these events will happen during an individual’s lifetime are dramatically low.

A mass killing, where four or more people (not including the shooter) are killed, happens about every two weeks. While it is prudent to be prepared for catastrophes that could weaken or destroy a fragile social structure, we should not do so at the expense of guarding ourselves from threats that we are more likely to encounter.

Written by a law enforcement veteran who has worked for police agencies across the United States, the U.S. Department of Justice and INTERPOL, Don’t Be a Victim, offers common sense strategies to help prevent crime, protect your home, and keep your family safe from criminals.

Emergency Air for Shelter-In-Place Preppers and Home Built Bunkers

This book offers a reasonable solution for an affordable air filtration system.

After the events of 9/11, we as a nation were made aware of new technical threats that could be made against the public by terrorists. These threats include anthrax, dirty-bomb dispersions, radioactive nuclear fallout, biological warfare attacks, and pandemic viruses, to name a few.

It was at this time that we were also told we could seal up in a room using duct tape and plastic sheeting to protect from these threats. Many people joked about just taping a plastic bag over your head as being an equivalent plan, which really isn’t far from the truth of the matter. Sealing in a room (or anywhere) is problematic at best since your supply of breathable air is limited. Preppers facing any of the above mentioned threats would ultimately have to chose between suffocation or exposure to the threat.

The system detailed in this book allows anyone to breathe safely while under threat and while following FEMA guidelines for sheltering-in-place.

Real Time Machines: The Future is an APP

This is a book about time machines….real ones. If the terms “web bot project” and “predictive linguistics” are not on your radar, you’re way behind the information curve. You see humankind’s ability to “see through time” is rapidly evolving new science. So in a sense, time travel is becoming REAL.  Even before Jules Verne, people were fascinated with being able to tell the future accurately. The huge popularity of Nostradamus and other “seers” is only the tip of the iceberg.

This book is a complete course in how the future casts a shadow before it and how newly evolving software scanning wide or defined types of websites is improving the odds of being able to forecast future events correctly.

Guns Across the Border: How and Why the U.S. Government Smuggled Guns into Mexico: The Inside Story

The true and shocking story of an undercover smuggling operation. Conducted under the umbrella of Project Gunrunner, intended to stem the flow of firearms to Mexico, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) ran a series of “gun walking” sting operations, including Operations Wide Receiver and Operation Fast & Furious. The government allowed licensed gun dealers to sell weapons to illegal straw buyers so that they could continue to track the firearms as they were transferred to higher-level traffickers and key figures in Mexican cartels.

Motivated by a sense of patriotic duty, Tucson gun dealer and author Mike Detty alerted the local ATF office when he was first approached by suspected cartel associates.  Detty’s undercover involvement in Operation Wide Receiver, the precursor to Operation Fast & Furious, which was by far the largest “gun walking” probe, stretched on for an astonishing and dangerous three years.

Spiraling Downward: Thinking About and Planning for Economic Collapse

America has suffered two economic blows in less than a decade: the collapse of the dot.com bubble in 2000 and the collapse of the real estate bubble in 2007-2009. These blows have left the U.S. struggling to stay on its feet. Spiraling Downward considers the consequences if a still-weak America took another hit, another stock market crash and credit crunch. Given unaddressed imbalances in the US economy, an economic collapse, is indeed possible.

This book charts a path that an economic collapse might take. It starts with the anatomy of a market crash and a credit crunch. It seeks to identify the danger zones from which another crash might arise. It then looks at how a crash might shock an economy already weak into an un-arrested downward spiral. Spiraling Downward thus offers a way to think about the unthinkable. At a time when conventional views of recession and recovery prevail, this book asks us to consider a different proposition: maybe this time it’s different.

It was 2017 when the attack was finally launched, coming from a direction that no one had predicted, with consequences beyond imagination. Wyatt and his family were already on the down and out. Years fighting through a struggling economy, tight credit, and government regulations had already taken their toll.

When society collapses, they have one chance left – a lifeboat awash in a sea of anarchy. There is a place of safety, a deserted island nicknamed Crusoe – but it won’t be easy. 299 Days: The Visitors

The Visitors, the fifth book in the 299 Days series, follows Grant Matson, the Team, and other Pierce Point residents as they adjust to a rapidly changing post-Collapse reality. When the Team is summoned to bust a meth lab and protect their neighbors, they find themselves in an intense crime scene that results in the community having to decide innocence, guilt and punishment.

Adjusting to this “new normal” is a challenge to Grant and others as they navigate a world where Pop-Tarts cost $45 a box, neighbors die from easily preventable conditions, and what remains of the former U.S. Government is deliberately choosing who they will and will not help. As tensions grow in Pierce Point and the Team begins to face organized opposition, they are presented with an incredible opportunity by the arrival of Special Forces Ted and his game-changing proposal. Grant finds himself at a crossroads as he must decide whether he and the Team will formally join the Patriots and train to become guerilla fighters against the growing forces of the Loyalists or standby and watch events unfold. Grant knows one decision could risk his marriage and family, while another would mean letting others decide their fate.

The Final Word

If you have been keeping count, you will seen that I have seventeen books lined up in the Summer Book Festival.  Some of the authors were also a part of the Fall or Winter Book Festivals so I am sending them a new batch of questions for our little chat.  All of the other interviews have been completed and are in hand and ready to go as we roll them out along with the giveaways, starting next week.

What started out as a way to share some great reading ideas with my readers has become so much more than that. The combination of reader comments along with the author insights have helped our little Backdoor Survival community become better prepared and better informed.

Thank you, everyone for your past and future participation in the Backdoor Survival Book Festivals.

Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!
