I try to think about prepping at different levels. What is available fresh in the stores or from the garden. What am I processing for long/short term storage. What do I need to rotate out. Having fresh food available has spoiled me. In the winter I sprout seeds to have something fresh. I have not experimented with a root cellar yet to extend out what I have available fresh. It all means nothing unless YOU are able on your own to replace your food supplies. I have learned how to harvest seeds. I have studied what Native Americans grew and what native plants they used for food here in the Southwest. I harvest water. I feed and water the wild life than comes to me in the same place everyday. I know where on my property I could look for my next meal if I had too. I know where in the desert to look for food. My ancestors lived in caves and “discovered” fire. Safeway and mankind did not arrive on this planet at the sametime. We capable of more than we give ourselves credit for. Read The Long Walk about an escape from a Russian prison camp. Read the Wreck of the Medusa. Believe in yourself.

  2. 10% of folks are Psychopaths,10%are sociopaths.. either type will use you and kill you without a thought
No regret,No remorse.. In 2 or 3 weeks without food your most gentle neighbor will look at you as a steak and cut your throat to feed themselves or their children.. That is survival..If the world goes to shit
Everyone with Diabetes, past age 75,obese, Hypertension, vision or hearing problems will be dead in one year or less.. The only problem with a Brave New World,is Humans.. Don’t kum bye Ya this crap..Global consciousness ????Maybe,Maybe not . Some Killer being put on the web,Oh how terrible.. History..Look!!
Some land far far away.. Too many distractions for folks in russia,eastern/Western europe,USA,China,Japan,India… Not their problem.. People becoming More nice to each other… Utopia???
I have been in Medicine for 43 years now,Ain’t seen no evidence of it yet.. Just more parasites living off a lot of folks hard work..Expecting others to feed and clothe them and their children… Watching both political parties become one party…I have hope things will get better.. But not without sweat, hard work and Blood..Plan for the worst, hope for the best..5steps to awakening.. Hes got a long way to go.. Many delusions to overcome..As do we all..

  3. Maurie says:

The problem with medication is that the ‘use by date’ can come around without being used and then you have to throw them out, one of my asthma controllers is $149, so you have to keep rotating to ensure they are still okay, and yes, having 7 or 8 can be a costly waste if you forget. Also to double up to have a spare lot can be a problem also..

    • RangerRick says:

The use by date means nothing. I have inhalers that are several years past the use by date and they work just fine and I am still kicking. Most meds can be kept years past their use by date .
Go on line and research this topic, experts will share the same feelings.
Federal storage facilities dont throw out all those meds, they keep them and they use after their use by date has come up.
Former fed storage person who never threw out nothing.
      Best Regards,RangerRick

Doomsday Preppers is a stupid reality show which is what most of TV is being turned into. Very little of Doomsday Preppers will help the average individual. Just my opinion…………….Wooly

I have one more comment to make. It’s not about Guns. It’s about you and me. Our state of health. will for the most part determine how we survive in bad times. All those people who are all sorts of Meds will be first to go. Have all the survival supplies in the world isn’t going to save ,if you run out of Meds.
I am 70 years, in good health and not taking any Meds. Most people, my age, are on 8 or 9 different meds. How long do you think they are going to live without those Meds. Take care of your health, eat right, keep you weight down and exercise. Health is the most important asset you have, don’t make bad life-style choices.

  6. Roy Patterson says:

I have a Ruger 9mm. For the money, in my opinion, it’s the best choice. For the person who is new to guns, I would suggest a revolver, like a Ruger GP100. After the person has more experience with guns than get a semi-automatic. One more thing, they need to take a good gun safety course. I don’t believe in buying a lot of expensive guns. I spend my time learning how to use the ones I have. My 30-06 will out shoot my friends AR-15 every time.
Here in Arizona we have the most liberal guns laws in the country. Forget about permits, you don’t need them here.

  7. Alex says:

At the end of the article you state that you hoped you wouldn’t have to use your guns. I say this is the wrong attitude and is defeatist and reveals that you are hoping there won’t be a fight. With what is coming you should simply say you are ready and willing when the time comes, no apologies.

I havent piped in yet, been a bit busy.Survivor husband, I agree with what you chose. you researched what You! needed for you. that is what should be done. And… you did something about it,as should others. I know that something is coming, that will require that I think and take action as if we won’t get any help from anyone other than our closest, deer friends, family, and I am fully capable and willing to defend what I have, and my dear friends, family members( (remember what the govt. did during hurricane Katrina-the govt. disarmed the innocents, many people were raped, beaten, vandalised) though I am sure at this point that something nasty is coming our way. I still have the hope that I will never have to resort to using what I have. There is absolutely Nothing! wrong with holding on to that hope, we all should hope for the best. and if my friends are holding onto that hope, that they have than they have something.. Alex-I think you were a bit harsh, as you don’t know survivor husband as I do. if all you think is the worst, then there is no hope left for future generations. think before you leap, please. Besides, both survivor woman, and survivor husband have inspired many, including myself, although I grew up in this mindset, and… they are light-hearted, and continually have an up tone about things, and do things in such a way that makes it much less intimidating for those who don’t have the means to go hung-how on prepping for the worst. If I had the money and where-with-all to do what I think I needed?….. enough said. again. good job! Survivor Husband:-))

Nice choice on the purchase of the Glock 19 9mm. I have owned one as my conceal and carry weapon since 1993. I have installed custom Houge rubber grips, an extended slide release, extended magazine release and an integrated laser sight that replaces the slide spring (it is completely inside the gun and is parallel to the barrel) I would be happy to send you more info if you like.
    Kind regards,
    -Jerry

    • That would be great, Jerry. Shelly will look forward to receiving this information.

    • Glidemann says:

I have tried several Glocks, and with my size hands I just can’t get a good grip on a double stack magazine handgun. If it doesn’t fit or feel right, you shouldn’t bother trying to “get it to work”. You must have control. I wish I could though, because they are great guns. I do have a compact 9mm though. I like 1911 style .45 caliber, and they work well for me. Full size or Officers size, both shoot well. Heavier and bigger, but practice, practice with whatever firearm you choose. Carefully placed shots, and magazine capacity is less important. I always carry several loaded mags, and an extra box or two in my Get Home Bag in case of marauding Zombies.

    Gaye,
Nice Blog you have here. hmmm. the question of how
much time we have, is Definately a crap shoot. I am however, concerned
about the Occupyers ramping up their violence later this
year, they seam to think its ok to attack anyone with money. there has been multiply murders, and rapes. they are funded by George Soros, and the discusting things they do in public, makes
my stomach belch nasty’s. they have stayed in homes, and churches, defiling, vandalizing, stealing where ever they go. and with elections just a few months
away, anything can happen. don’t know if
anyone has ever heard of George Soros, but he is part
of the driving force of collapsing the U.S. economy. He actually made
1-billion in one night when Venezuela’ economy crashed. He has
stated publically that next year there will be fundamental
changes for us, I don’t have a crystal ball, but I don’t have good feelings about that. He also stated
that if obi man is not re-elected, he will instigate chaos by claiming election fraud, either way, we as a free people will get screwed. Obi man, if elected, will eviscerate the 1st, and 2nd amendendments. This whole mess about abortions, birth control, etc. is not about women’s rights. it’s an attack on religion. The peeps already
have planned parenthood, they already do all of those things. if the peeps from all faiths don’t band together and fight this, well, we lose. He has also told the Brady’s that if he gets re-elected, he will do whatever
it takes to ban all privately owned weapons in the U.S. even if he has to do it under-handedly. I could go on and on, but I don’t want to be the cause of your blood pressure sky rocketing, mine does at times, but I have chosen to be informed as much as I can, not that I can do much about it,
but I have better understanding of what lies ahead in the next few years. I recently found out that our borders are not only open and porous, but have been deliberately set up this way. Just south of of the Mexican side of the border is a Hezbollah training center, and large one at that, so Iran, Hugo Chavez, and Cuba can invade quite easily. now, you may think that our northern border is safe, I thought so until recently, truth is, we are much more vulnerable than our southern border is. and there are big cities everywhere. make no mistake, Hezbollah, the Muslim brotherhood keep stating that they’re life’s goal is to eliminate Israel, and the west. take heed, because they are here already. I learned several years back
that there are more than 100 sleeper cells right here on U.S. soil just waiting, working jobs, blending Right in. It’s gloomy to say this, but they have us over a barrel. It’s really bone chilling to know that the majority of the younger generation have been brainwashed into thinking that our constitution doesn’t give us much in the way of freedoms and think we should eliminate it. and writing up a new one, modeled after the one in South Africa. and we paid for that too. if things continue at the same rate, which is conservatively speaking, we will see the death of America. years ago I tried to warn people about this, now it’s out in the open and obvious, only those who still have their heads in the sand, refuse to grasp the thought of something happening here. I estimate that within 3 years if he is re-elected, we will have a new godless currency, new traditions, and many other fundamental changes. oh, and this open-society that George talks about instituting, won’t be the happy place we see on TV. has anyone ever heard of Zeitgeist? he is behind that too. ok, typing on this
phone is making my fingers go numb. So, maybe with lots of prayers and what ever is left of good politicians we have left, things Can… be turned around. I’m sceptical, but I pray for this country. It is getting increasingly more difficult to speak out against the blatant corruption happening, the 1st amendment is all but been stomped on., my grandchildren will never have the freedoms I grew up with, and even sadder is the fact that they won’t even know what they’ve lost. Oh, meat glue-Yuck!!!! just another reason to eat in, not out.

    • Glidemann says:

George Soros is a billionaire, and is buying the country to turn it into modern feudalism. Disarm the populace and turn us into serfs to serve the rich. Obamanation is helping, and I agree completely with Homesteader. The politicians are now owned by corporations, and globalism is slowly overtaking the USA. Obama has already proven he will use back door “appointments” to achieve his goals. Hopefully the latest news about his globetrotting in 1981 under his “other name”, and aid as a foreign student in college will be taken seriously. A simple question: what passport did he use to travel to Pakistan when travel there by US citizens was not allowed? He has spent millions of his campaign funds on attorney fees to try to keep all this from getting out.

Hey guys! My husband and I are trying to sell our cabin. We bought it for prepping purposes but cannot afford to pay on it. We hardly use it given that its so far away. Its smack dab in the middle of the Ozark National Forest. Its off grid, secluded, beautiful, creek runs through the front yard. I was wondering if you have any suggestions on any websites that I could share this information. Here is a link to our cabin. http://arkansasdiamondrealty.com/mls126266_big_piney.html Any advice or tips would be much appreciated.
    Thank You.

The biggest problem I have with my food storage is the peanut butter and chocolate keep disapearing! I think it could be a teenage rodent problem. All my canned broccoli and freeze dried brussel sprouts have never been touched.

  12. RangerRick says:

Keep stocking food. I figure you already have the 3 months cross over food from cans to short term stoarge to long term storage. Comfort food and fun things are good to do. I have over 40 years of running into places most folks are trying to get out of. Having your food in order is a great step.
That said, If you live near North Idaho, Priest River Community Church is letting me teach Survival and Prepper Classes. Saturday Feb 11th 2012 from 10 AM TO 4 PM.
