Whew! I was so nervous about my appearance on the Doctor Prepper Show today but you know what? It was fun and I guess I did okay because I have been invited back for another show on July 14. Yay!

The new Backdoor Survival Kit
Today I am also announcing my new, customized kit from Survival Gear Bags. I hope that you notice that this is not your father’s bug out bag! I have designed a get out of dodge bag that is both stylish and useful – for both genders. It can be worn cross body or as a shoulder bag which is very useful if you are also carrying a back pack.
The cornerstone of this kit is the Kaito Voyager Solar Crank Radio and Flashlight. This little guy has it all: a multi-band AM/FM and shortwave (SW) radio, 7 NOAA weather channels, a five LED adjustable reading lamp, and a multi-function LED flashlight.
All these features can be operated indefinitely without external power thanks to the high quality hand crank AC brushless generator. The solar panel powers the radio by itself and charges the built-in batteries as well. Furthermore, it can be used with 3 AA batteries allowing you to play the radio the old fashioned way. Now how cool is that?
There are lots of other practical items – you know, the kinds of things you are always looking for but can’t seem to find. Personally, I think that this would make a great kit to throw in the car to have during a road trip or even the daily commute to your job.
The cost is $199 with free shipping. Not bad when you consider the cost of the individual components is $256. Plus, it will be delivered to your door – no running around town to pick up various of parts and pieces.
Doctor Prepper meets the Backdoor Survival Kit
Purchasers of the kit will also receive a special copy of Doctor Prepper’s eBook, the E/PAK 72 hour Emergency Preparedness Action Kit. This will be emailed to you so you can print out as many copies as you like plus you can stash a copy in your bag as a reference when stuck in an emergency situation.
Once again, I would like to extend a big thank you to my readers for all of your encouragement and support! As always, leave a comment or send me an email using the contact form to share your thoughts.
Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!
Backdoor Survival Tip of the Day: Today I share my super easy recipe for hummingbird food or, as I call it “bird juice”. Here is what you need:
- a clean gallon jug (but not a milk jug)
- 3-4 cups plain white sugar
Measure the sugar into a large, microwave proof measuring cup, (Or a pot if you don’t feel microwaves are safe – your choice.) Add enough water to cover the sugar and then some. The exact amount does not water.
Heat the sugar water mix until warm – usually this takes about two minutes. While the sugar-water mix is heating up, fill the jug about half way up with cold water. (There is a reason – you do not want the jug to melt when you pour in the sugar mixture.)
When the sugar-water mix is warm, take it out and stir it up real good. Your goal is to dissolve the sugar. This does not have to be perfect, just make sure there is not a layer of sugar left on the bottom of your measure. Now pour the mixture in to your jug and top it off with cool water.
That’s it – homemade bird juice. I always use just 3 cups of water and I get tons of hummers. If you find that you aren’t attracting any hummingbirds, bump the sugar up to four cups and see what happens. Just remember, if you are new to feeders, it may take some time for the hummers to find you. The first year I lived here I only got a few and it took weeks before the first one showed up. Now the cute little vultures perch 8 or 10 at a time on my feeders. I could watch them for hours!
From the Bargain Bin: The Lodge 12″ Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet is still only $16.91 at Amazon. With free shipping, this is a steal. I plan to leave this link here until I see the price go up. If you have not cooked with a cast iron skillet, you have got to give it a try. In spite of what you may have heard, it is not difficult to keep cast iron in tip top shape. Actually, it is a no-brainer. Read more at Survival Woman Reviews her new Lodge 12 inch Cast Iron Skillet.
Emergency Essentials is a great source of food for long term storage as well as supplies. I just received an email letting me know that they now have Mountain House products in stock. This is great news since Mountain House foods have been backordered for quite some time.
